Equipment and Technicality
The third session, "Equipment & Technicality," covers essential aspects of integrating technology into hybrid classrooms. It includes two subsessions: "First Steps of Hybrid Classrooms," which discusses technology requirements, instructional strategies, and setup logistics, and "Digital Transformation," which explores how digital tools enhance teaching, engagement, and collaboration. This session equips participants with the knowledge to effectively manage and optimize hybrid learning environments.

To Create Hybrid Spaces
During the fourth session, "To Create Hybrid Spaces," attendees will explore four key subsessions. The first, "Balance," addresses how to integrate online and in-person components effectively, maximizing engagement and balancing synchronous and asynchronous activities. "Inclusiveness" focuses on creating equitable and diverse hybrid environments, emphasizing cultural competency and reducing participation barriers. "Moderating" covers the roles of moderation and facilitation in promoting cooperation and maintaining a positive learning environment using technology. Lastly, "Collective Responsibilities" highlights the need for collaboration among all stakeholders-administrators, support staff, teachers, and students-to foster accountability and continuous improvement in hybrid learning spaces. These sessions aim to equip participants with the skills to create inclusive, dynamic hybrid classrooms.

Hybrid Classrooms
Inclusive Virtual Gallery walk

Duration: 70 min

Resources and materials: Virtual meeting platform (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams), online collaboration tools (e.g. Google Docs, Padlet)

Target group and number of participants: 10-30 students

Objectives and learning goals:
The purpose of this activity is to encourage inclusivity and diversity in a hybrid classroom by giving students a forum to discuss their cultural backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. Students will have the chance to investigate and value the diversity within their learning community while cultivating empathy, respect, and understanding by taking part in a virtual gallery walk.

Expected results:

  • A greater understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity in the classroom.
  • A greater sense of inclusivity and belonging among the students.
  • Improved connections and cooperation between classmates.

Step by step – how to do it
1. Introduction to the Virtual Gallery walk (10 min)
– Describe the activity’s goal, which is to encourage inclusivity and diversity in hybrid classrooms.
– Give a brief explanation of the virtual gallery walk’s operation and participants’ roles.

2. Preparation (15 min)
– Ask each student to create a digital representation (a picture, a piece of art, a symbol) that captures their identity, their cultural background, or their life experiences.
– Give students the task of uploading their digital artwork to an online platform or gallery.

3. Virtual Gallery walk (20 min)
– Give each participant access to the virtual gallery by sharing the link.
– Give each student time to view the digital representations in the gallery and read any comments or accompanying descriptions that their classmates have left.

4. Group discussions (10 min)
– Students can share their opinions, feelings, and reflections about the virtual gallery walk by participating in a guided discussion led by the teacher.
– Create topics for discussion or guiding questions to get students talking and help them gain a deeper understanding of inclusiveness and cultural diversity in the classroom.
– Encourage students to engage in respectful conversation and active participation.

5. Reflection (15 min)
– Encourage students to reflect on what they learned from the virtual gallery walk.
– Lead a quick wrap-up conversation in which students can discuss any learnings, conclusions, or next steps they want to take to promote inclusivity in the classroom.

Feedback check
– Get students’ opinions about the virtual gallery walk and how inclusive the hybrid classroom is by conducting a quick feedback survey.
– In order to further promote diversity and inclusivity, ask students to submit any ideas or suggestions for upcoming activities.

SAMR Model (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, Redefinition) Exploration

Duration: 1 hour

Resources and materials: SAMR model infographic/diagram, flipchart or whiteboard or post-it notes, pens

Target group and number of participants: 5-30 trainers and students

Objectives and learning goals:
The purpose of this activity is to introduce the SAMR model to learners and educators and investigate ways that integrating technology into the classroom can improve student learning in hybrid environments. After completing the exercise, participants will have a better understanding of the SAMR model’s various levels and be able to apply them to their own methods of teaching and learning.

Expected results:

  • A deeper comprehension of the SAMR model and how to use it in hybrid learning settings.
  • Identifying technological integration opportunities at various SAMR levels.
  • A greater capacity to use technology to change the way that lessons are taught and learned.

Step by step – how to do it:
1. Introduction to the SAMR model (15 min)

2. Exploration of the model (30 min)
– Divide the students into small groups (5-6 students each) and assign each group a specific educational task or activity eg solve a real-world problem or case study.
– Ask for ideas from groups regarding how each SAMR level of technology could be used to approach the task.
– Motivate participants to think about how using technology can improve the task in terms of critical thinking, creativity, engagement, and teamwork.

3. Group presentations (15 min)

Feedback check
✔ Have a quick feedback session to find out what the participants thought of the exercise and how well they understood the SAMR model.
✔ Invite students to share any thoughts, questions, or worries they may have.

Further tips and questions
– Urge participants to look into more materials about the SAMR model and the use of technology in the classroom.
