Digital Resources
Softwares and Programs where the main tools and software platforms used in VET are described, including Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Moodle, WordPress plugins such as Tutor LMS or LearnPress, and online meeting platforms like Zoom, Google Meet, and Jitsi. We will explore the key features, use cases, and considerations for choosing between free and paid options. Open Source and Open Access where we analyze the differences between open source software/platforms and open access, highlighting how these options support the sharing of knowledge and accessibility in education differently. The reasons why an institution might prefer one over the other, considering flexibility, cost, and customization, will be discussed. We will define the concept of Creative Commons, explaining how its licenses can be used to share educational resources legally and flexibly, promoting open access and the use of teaching materials.

About Lesson

The choice of software and programs plays a significant role in creating effective online and hybrid learning environments. This section provides an overview of the essential software solutions to support both students and educators in VET, including options for content creation, communication, and learning management. We will consider both full versions for institutions with more resources and basic alternatives for contexts with limited budgets.

Solutions for Creating Educational Content

  • Presentation Programs: Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides are standard tools for creating educational presentations. Both allow the integration of text, images, and videos, facilitating the preparation of engaging lessons.
  • Authoring Tools: For more advanced online courses, software like Adobe Captivate and Articulate Storyline enables the creation of interactive e-learning content, but require a greater investment in terms of costs and training.
  • Alternative: iSpring Free, a simplified but powerful authoring tool that integrates with PowerPoint, offering a good starting point for creating interactive lessons without additional costs.

Learning Management Platforms (LMS)

  • LMS Platforms such as WordPress, Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard offer extended functionalities for learning management, including tools for assigning tasks, assessment, online discussion, and tracking student progress.
  • Basic Alternative: Google Classroom provides a simplified and intuitive learning management platform that integrates Google Workspace tools, suitable for institutions with limited budgets or those already using Google Workspace for Education.

Video Conferencing Software

  • Complete Solutions: Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet are robust options that support virtual lessons, meetings, and remote collaboration with advanced features like breakout rooms, screen sharing, and session recording.
  • Alternative: Jitsi Meet offers a completely free open-source video conferencing solution that can be used without the need to create accounts or download software, ideal for quick virtual meetings or small classes.

Collaboration and Communication Tools

  • Advanced Tools: Miro, Slack, and Microsoft Teams facilitate real-time communication and collaboration among students and teachers, supporting discussion channels, direct messaging, and integration with other tools.
  • Alternative: Discord, originally designed for the gaming community, has become a popular platform in education for creating class communities where students and teachers can interact in an informal and structured manner.

Considerations for Choosing Software

The selection of software should be based on several factors, including specific teaching needs, users’ technical skills, available budget, and compatibility with existing IT infrastructure. While full versions of software offer a wide range of functionalities, basic alternatives can provide effective solutions for contexts with limited resources, still allowing the creation of quality online and hybrid learning experiences.
