Open Source and Open Access where we analyze the differences between open source software/platforms and open access, highlighting how these options support the sharing of knowledge and accessibility in education differently. The reasons why an institution might prefer one over the other, considering flexibility, cost, and customization, will be discussed. We will define the concept of Creative Commons, explaining how its licenses can be used to share educational resources legally and flexibly, promoting open access and the use of teaching materials.

This section examines some of the most widespread and reliable solutions available on the market, from learning platforms (LMS) to video conferencing tools, highlighting their main features, advantages, and potential limitations.

Learning Management Systems (LMS)

Learning Management Systems (LMS) are software platforms designed to facilitate the creation, management, and distribution of online educational content. They act as a digital ecosystem where teachers can publish lessons, assign tasks, monitor student progress, and manage communication. LMSs support a variety of multimedia and interactive formats, offering tools for quizzes, discussion forums, and performance tracking. Below is a list of the most popular ones.

Moodle: One of the most popular open-source learning management systems, Moodle offers a flexible and customizable platform for VET. It supports a wide range of teaching activities, such as lessons, discussion forums, and tests, making it suitable for fully online and hybrid learning environments. Its open-source nature allows institutions to adapt the system to their specific needs without license costs.

WordPress: known primarily as a blogging and website creation platform, also supports VET through specific plugins such as Tutor LMS and LearnPress. These plugins transform a WordPress site into an LMS, enabling the creation and management of courses, lessons, and assessments. Although they may not offer all the functionalities of a dedicated LMS like Moodle, WordPress with the use of specific plugins represents a highly modular and expandable solution that allows going beyond the structural limits of more characterized platforms like Moodle.

Canvas is a cloud-based learning management system that facilitates an integrated educational experience for students and teachers. With its intuitive interface and rich mobile functionality, Canvas supports synchronous and asynchronous learning, allowing the creation of a dynamic and interactive learning environment. It offers collaboration, assessment, and communication tools, making it a popular choice among educational institutions of all levels.

Blackboard Learn, a widely used LMS platform that offers a wide range of teaching tools and assessment features to enrich students’ learning experience. With its advanced customization and progress tracking capabilities, Blackboard Learn fits well with the needs of institutions looking for a comprehensive solution to manage online and hybrid learning. The platform also supports integration with third-party tools and multimedia content, further expanding teaching possibilities.

 

Online Meeting Platforms

Online meeting platforms are communication tools that enable virtual meetings through video conferencing. These platforms support real-time collaboration among geographically distributed participants, offering features such as screen sharing, text chat, session recording, and breakout rooms. They have become essential in online and hybrid education, allowing teachers to conduct live lessons, workshops, and individual consultations, in addition to facilitating group work and discussion among students.

Zoom: Having become synonymous with virtual meetings during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Zoom offers robust features for webinars, virtual lessons, and remote collaboration. Its user-friendly interface and the ability to handle large groups of participants make it a preferred tool for many educational institutions.

Google Meet: Integrated into the Google Workspace ecosystem, Google Meet provides a simple yet effective solution for video conferencing. Its ease of access and integration with other Google services like Google Calendar and Gmail make it particularly useful for educational environments that already use these tools.

Jitsi: As an open-source option for video conferencing, Jitsi offers a cost-free alternative to commercial tools like Zoom and Google Meet. Jitsi can be run directly from the browser without the need to install additional software, facilitating access for students and teachers.

Microsoft Teams: Part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, Teams not only facilitates virtual meetings but also serves as a hub for team collaboration, integrating chat, video conferencing, file sharing, and integration with other Microsoft applications. For educational institutions, Teams offers specific features for education, such as virtual classrooms, assignment and grading tasks, making it a versatile tool for VET. Its integration with Office software and robust security make it particularly attractive for schools and universities that already rely on the Microsoft suite for their IT infrastructure.

 

Choice Considerations

The choice among these options depends on several factors, including budget, the specific needs of the institution or course, the scale of the educational offering, and users’ familiarity with the platform. While open-source solutions like WordPress and Jitsi offer great flexibility and potential savings on license costs, commercial platforms like Zoom and Google Meet can provide a more polished user experience and reliable support. The final decision should be based on a careful assessment of teaching needs and available resources.

The LMS platforms and video conferencing tools described represent only a part of the options available for VET. Choosing the right tools is a crucial step to ensure that online education is accessible, engaging, and productive, thus contributing to student success and the achievement of educational objectives.
